The Cosmic Storm Machine was a machine invented by Mr. Fantastic in order to help reverse the mutation of Ben Grimm. It's designed to recreate the conditions of the same Cosmic Radiation storm, that mutated the members of the Fantastic Four into what they are now. The storm travels from the generator through cables, which invert the polarity of the storm, to a Chamber big enough for a human to stand inside. The chamber stabilizes the storm and the reversed wave signal would turn the mutated being back to normal.
However, there are high risks involved in the process. The slightest miscalculation of the process could mutate the occupant further, or in a worse case scenario prove fatal. Even when the machine is completely ready, the storm also requires a huge amount of power in order to stabilize itself and gain critical mass, otherwise, the reversing process will not work and can negatively affect the occupant, as seen when Reed Richards attempted to use himself as a test subject.
Dr. Doom, who was also mutated by the same radiation, was able to use his powers to draw more power from the surrounding buildings to stabilize the machine, successfully curing Ben Grimm of his mutation. The machine can also mutate the same occupant again after they are cured, as seen when Ben regained his mutation.
